Designed for Community

The Purpose for Life… What is it?
What is your purpose for life?
Could you verbalize it if someone asked?

I don’t know what you have chosen as your purpose for living, but I do know what you were designed for… Relationships.
Connectedness.
Community.

We all want to connect.
We all desire community.
But how will we get this community that we crave?guys cooking on a big grill to signify relationships and community

We find little connections all the time – at the ballgame with fellow fans, at the office with our co-workers, with our neighbors at the barbeque. But isn’t there a deeper connection we can find?

I love how this is explained in “Creature of the Word” as the authors discuss the early church of Philippi:

So the little growing church in Philippi was now home to people like this: a Wealthy, upscale businesswoman… a slave girl with a deep, dark, wounded past… a tough-nosed jailer and his family…. What else did these people have in common but the gospel? They never would have gone to the same restaurants, hung out in the same parts of town, or listened to the same music. But because God had radically transformed them, they shared a common bond deeper than anything that divided them. They were together only because of the gospel.

Together only because of the gospel….
You see, you were created for an intimate relationship with God and others.
It is the only thing that’ll satisfy completely.

Leave one or the other out, and you’ll still be missing a part of the community that you need.

What we find out is that the gospel is the only thing that can truly put us together in real community. It is what we were designed for.

Reconnect Off The Grid

So…
Long time, no Brian.
Or at least no Brian devotions.
Yes, I took a month-and-a-half break from writing devotional thoughts.
Life got busy and “something had to give.” That is no different than you – you are extremely busy as well. The only question becomes, what will you give up due to your busy-ness. The thing that I gave up was my on-line activity. Not just the writing but even the checking of social media and internet. I have hardly looked at facebook, twitter, my website, or even on-line news in the last 40 days.

And strangely enough, though we find ourselves addicted to our social media and to our connectedness to all the happenings of our friends, to the news of the day, and to our entertainment personalities, what I found was that I became addicted to staying “off the grid.”

It was good. In fact, I didn’t feel disconnected from the world. Rather, I felt a bit reconnected to others that I see face-to-face each week. It made it a bit hard to step back into the online fray. Not that I don’t enjoy the writing. I do. And I appreciate so much those of you who are always so encouraging about my writings. But I also found that I enjoyed not being in the glow of the phone/tablet/laptop screen. Maybe more of us need to take a break at times and learn to reconnect with others outside of social media.

I recently read that Japan has established Internet “fasting camps” where Internet-addicted children learn to engage in real relationships. Researchers have linked too much “screen time” to obesity, sleep problems, depression, and other not-so-good stuff. Japan has come to understand that our drive for “connectedness” can lead to stress, and our stress can keep us from engaging in activities that reduce our worry and anxiety. So they are doing something about this damaging cycle. And the funny thing is… Japan ranks 4th in the world for Internet use, somewhere behind us.

I’m not telling you to stop using social media. I just encourage you to have balance. But more than that, I encourage you to be sure you are connecting to real people right in front of you each week. Go out to eat lunch with a friend, and don’t look at your phone the entire hour. Or do the same around the dinner table with your family.

And when you get together this week with your family for Thanksgiving – thank God for them and enjoy them. Don’t bury your face in your phone or tablet – enjoy the few hours you are with your loved ones. You all will have carved out several hours to come together – so use that time to reconnect to one another. There will be plenty of time to update your status after you tell them goodbye and are riding home with a full belly.

You Are As Close To The Lord As You Want To Be

Lo Siento… (I am sorry).
I’ve been “off the grid” for two weeks. But that is often what happens when I go out of the country. It is not that I don’t have internet access as much as I don’t have time to post when on an international mission trip. But I had a great time in Mexico with friends I had not seen in a year, as well as being part of the very first worship service at a church plant in Uriangato, Mexico.

Anyway, back to today’s post…

“You Are As Close To The Lord As You Want To Be.”

Yowch!

Can that be true?
Definitely not.
It can’t be.
It can’t be my fault.
I mean, I want to be closer to God.
But then why aren’t I?
Is God moving away from me as I am trying to draw near to Him? No. That can’t be it.
Maybe it is true.
Maybe I am as close to the Lord as I want to be.

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

The scriptures seem to be clear that God doesn’t move away from us, rather we move closer or further from Him.

If I want to be closer to Him, then it is on me to spend more time talking to Him, reading His Words to me, worshiping Him. He is as close to me as He can get – in that He has put His Holy Spirit within me. So it is up to me as to how much I choose to interact with Him.

If I truly want to be closer to God, then I will be closer by making the necessary changes in my life to spend more time with Him.

Guess it’s time to make some changes.

How about you? Are you close enough?
